Alternative Health Care
What is alternative health care?
Alternative health care is a broad category encompassing many diverse modalities of medicine ranging from ancient healing practices to new, cutting edge medical theory. What all the practices under the umbrella term .alternative health care" have in common is that they provide an alternative healing modality to the current allopathic, mainstream approach.
Though western medicine is excellent in treating severe and trauma-induced
health issues it often misses the mark on milder or more nebulous complaints.
The diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome or chronic fatigue syndrome simply
describes a collection of symptoms. However, because of the paradigm of allopathic
medicine it fails to understand what causes these .syndromes" and therefore
offers no cure.
Americans are turning to alternative health care by large numbers in search for help after encountering failure and frustration on the allopathic path. Because many alternative health care practices approach health issues with different paradigms and views of the functioning of the human body, patients often find relief from their symptoms by trying alternative treatments.
Most Americans have never heard of the alternative health
care modalities available to them until they become ill and
find no relief in their doctor's office. Alternative health
care is the most effective when the body becomes so unbalanced
that no pharmaceuticals can bring it back into balance.
While some alternative health care treatments can take a long time to work, as they gently coax the body back into balance, other alternative health care treatments work as quickly as allopathic treatments. In either case, patience, discipline and faith may be required to speed along the healing process.
The growing popularity of alternative health care is not a testament to the failure of western medicine, but rather a compliment to it. It can help support conventional treatment for serious health conditions rather than replacing it all together. Because every body is different, effective alternative health care treatments must be individualized to each patient. The lack of a one size fits all approach in alternative health care makes it all the more effective in treating the most stubborn and mysterious disorders.
While some people may consider alternative health care approaches to be unconventional, unorthodox or unproven, clinical evidence exists to illustrate its efficacy. Many natural approaches are backed up by placebo controlled double blind cross over published studies. Though some alternative health care approaches may seem foreign, they offer many possibilities for healing. There have been many miraculous stories of recovery in the alternative health care arena when conventional medicine has failed.
The innovative and integrative therapies of alternative health care not only provide hope and alternatives in today.s health care environment, they offer a perspective that is fresh, an approach based in proven methods of healing and tests that uncover additional information and perhaps, another diagnosis. When allopathic doctors have exhausted their resources and are unable to come up with a diagnosis, it is not too uncommon for them to tell patients that their complaints are in their heads. Most alternative health care practitioners know that the problem is not just in the head but also in the body and soul.
